UNUSUAL BEAR HIBERNATION

Over last 20 years the average annual temperature in Slovakia has increased by 1.2o C. Winter 2013 - 14 was virtually snow free across almost the entire country with the exception of the high mountain areas. The bears responded to this situation by interrupted hibernation at the turn of the year and later in winter they were fully active. 5 of our 6 bears monitored by GPS - GSM telemetry in the West Carpathians were active throughout the winter including 2 females accompanied by yearlings. Only one female was denned from the end of November 2013 till spring 2014 due to maternal duties discovered later by the observation of the whole family.
